Hands-on Thatching Workshops in Ireland

Once you’ve explored our free online modules, it’s time to get your hands on the reed.

At Boglands Hideaway we offer a range of practical, introductory workshops and short courses focused on traditional Irish thatching with sustainable water reed (Phragmites australis). You’ll work on purpose-built practice roofs and selected real structures, learning both traditional and contemporary methods under the guidance of experienced thatcher Mike Davies of Thatching Ireland.

These sessions are designed for complete beginners and the simply curious. They are relaxed, supportive and hands-on — perfect if you want to experience a traditional craft, deepen your appreciation of Irish vernacular skills, or discover whether thatching is a path you’d like to explore further.

All workshops are adults only (18+), in keeping with the adults-only policy of Boglands Hideaway.

Pricing Information

Prices may vary by date or inclusions (e.g. materials, lunch, or optional overnight accommodation).

Roof thatching materials are expensive and there is a lot of wastage when training. Workshops are priced to cover these costs.

Refreshments

Lunch is included with all courses. Tea, coffee, water and snacks are available at all times. Help yourself. If you have any special dietary requirements please do let us know when you book.

You will receive a Certificate of Attendance only — these are experiential workshops, not formal qualifications.
